How much does a website cost?
Realistic prices and what affects the final cost.

"How much does a website cost?" is one of the most common questions I get from clients and acquaintances.
The cost of building a website in Croatia in 2026 can range from a few hundred to several thousand euros, depending on the type of website, functionality, design, and SEO optimization. In this article, I'll explain what affects the price and provide realistic examples of how much a website costs today.
My answer to this question is almost always the same:
"How much does a car cost?"
And then we usually both start laughing because it immediately becomes clear how broad the question really is.
Because realistically... You can buy an old Clio that gets you from point A to point B. You can get a new Golf with all the options. Or you can buy a Mercedes E-Class with a panoramic roof, automatic transmission, heated seats, and every sensor imaginable.
The same applies to websites.
Some people need a simple business presentation website. Some need an online store with payment processing. Some need a custom web application connected to external services, CRM systems, and booking platforms.
That's why there is no universal website price.
Why does the cost of website development vary so much?
"A website is like a car"
When buying a car, you first need to know:
- What do you actually need?
- What is your budget?
- What will you use it for?
- Do you want a basic model or a fully loaded one?
The same applies to websites. It's not the same whether you need:
- a simple one-page website
- a website with multiple pages
- an online store
- a booking system
- a multilingual website
- a custom application
- SEO optimization
- integration with external services
- a blog
And then we come to another comparison I like to use.
A showroom car or a custom-built car?
I often ask clients:
"Do you want a car from the showroom or one built to order?"
That immediately tells me a lot.
Because ready-made solutions exist — such as WordPress templates. That's like buying a finished car with predefined features.
It's faster. It's cheaper. And for many businesses, it's more than enough.
But sometimes a client wants something entirely their own. A unique design. Specific functionality. Speed. Scalability. Advanced SEO optimization.
That's when we're talking about custom development — for example, React or Next.js applications.
That's more like a car built directly from the factory according to your specifications.
Of course, it's more expensive. But you get something built specifically for you.
What actually determines the cost of a website?
There are several main factors that determine the price:
1. Type of website
The price is not the same for:
- a landing page
- a business website
- an online store
- a booking system
- a custom web application
The more complex the project, the more development time it requires.
2. Website design
Do you want a ready-made template or a unique design? Custom design means more work, but also a much more professional impression.
And let's be realistic — people form opinions about your company within seconds. If your website looks outdated or poorly designed, visitors will simply leave.
3. SEO optimization
This is the part many people ignore.
Today, it doesn't make much sense to build a website if nobody can find it on Google or AI search engines.
And that brings us to an important point...
SEO is not just "adding keywords."
There is:
- on-page SEO
- technical SEO
- off-page SEO
- local SEO
- speed optimization
- content structure
- content optimization for AI search engines such as Google Search and Perplexity
If someone tells you they do SEO, feel free to ask:
"Which part of SEO exactly?"
Because there is a huge difference between basic SEO optimization and a seriously optimized website that includes technical SEO, off-page SEO, local SEO, and more.
What is website responsiveness?
"Responsiveness" is not a feature — it's a standard
I have to emphasize this.
If someone is selling you "responsive design" today as a special feature, they're selling you smoke and mirrors.
It's like someone selling you a car and saying:
"Good news — it has wheels."
Every modern website today must work properly on:
- mobile phones
- tablets
- laptops
- desktop computers
That's not an extra option — it's the absolute minimum.
AI website creation and "vibe coding"
Today there are AI tools that can build a website in a matter of minutes.
And honestly?
Some of those tools are becoming truly impressive.
But...
A beautiful design does not necessarily mean a quality website.
It's like buying a car that looks amazing on the outside while everything under the hood is a mess.
Common problems with AI-generated websites include:
- messy codebases
- poor SEO structure
- security issues
- poor optimization
- difficult maintenance
- upgrade problems
AI can be an excellent tool.
And I use it every day.
But AI is not a replacement for an experienced developer.
Especially when we're talking about serious business operations.
Website maintenance
A website is not a "build it and forget it" project.
Again, just like a car.
You need to maintain it.
Regular updates are important for:
- security
- speed
- compatibility
- SEO
- stability
Especially with WordPress websites.
If a website isn't maintained regularly, problems will eventually appear.
That's why you should always check:
- whether maintenance is included in the price
- what the maintenance package includes
- how often backups are performed
- whether security monitoring is included
So how much does a website actually cost?
Of course, every website is different and the final price depends on functionality, design, and the amount of content.
But here are some realistic price ranges to give you an idea of what to expect.
One-page website
A simple website consisting of a single page.
It sits directly on the main domain and contains several sections on one page:
- About Us
- Services
- Gallery
- Contact
- Basic on-page SEO
Estimated price: €500 – €900
Ideal for:
- apartments and vacation rentals
- small trades and local businesses
- events
- personal portfolios
- small local companies
It's like a small city car. It gets the job done and is perfectly sufficient for many people.
Business website with 5 pages
A website with multiple pages that can be optimized more effectively for SEO.
Example structure:
- Home
- About Us
- Services
- Blog
- Contact
With quality design, SEO optimization, and a solid structure.
Estimated price: €900 – €1,500
Today, this is roughly the standard for a more serious online business presence.
This is where we're talking about a "well-equipped car."
Larger website with 10+ pages
Larger projects with more content, more services, blog categories, galleries, multiple languages, etc.
These projects require more:
- planning
- development
- SEO optimization
Estimated price: €1,500 – €3,000+
Depending on complexity, the cost can be significantly higher.
WooCommerce online store with around 20 products
This is very common today.
People want a simple online store where they can:
- sell products
- accept online payments
- manage orders
- add products themselves
Typically includes:
- WooCommerce setup
- product entry
- credit card payments
- shipping setup
- basic SEO
Estimated price: €1,500 – €3,500
Of course, an online store can quickly become much more complex if you add:
- ERP integrations
- advanced filters
- multiple languages
- multiple currencies
- custom functionality
- inventory synchronization
At that point, the price increases accordingly.

Conclusion
Just like with cars, houses, or any serious investment — make sure you understand what you're actually buying.
Cheap and fast does not necessarily mean good quality.
And today, a quality website is not an expense — it's an investment.
Because a good website:
- builds trust
- attracts new clients
- strengthens your brand
- increases sales
- works for you 24/7
And finally...
It's better to have a simple but well-built website than a "spaceship" website that nobody can use, that runs slowly, and that Google doesn't like.
